Mug cakes are the ultimate dorm room dessert. They’re the perfect treat for a late night study sesh or a movie night with friends. However, they’re only convienent when the recipe is simple, right? What person keeps a pantry of baking materials in their freshman year dorm room?! It’s simply not realistic to be cracking eggs, sifting flour and measuring out vegetable oil on your futon.
Instead, you’ve got to try this incredibly simple mug cake hack. The second I figured this out during college, I attempted to make a mug cake for everyone that walked through my door just to show them how cool it was. Here’s the secret: Combine 1 box of angel food cake mix with another box of cake mix. For example, 1 box of angel food cake + red velvet cake mix will make red velvet mug cakes; similarily, 1 box of angel food cake mix + chocolate cake mix will make chocolate mug cakes. The key is to combine these two in a container or a zip lock bag and store it in your dorm room. HERE’S THE BEST PART. When you’re ready for a mug cake, all you need to do is combine 3 T of cake mix and 2 T of water in a mug. Mix it, and microwave it for 1 minute. THAT’S IT! Cake mix and water, and you have the fluffiest most delicious cake in one minute.
My recipe for cinnamon maple mug cakes utilizes a mix of angel food cake mix and yellow cake mix. I like this combination because it not only makes yellow cake (yum!), but it creates a canvas to develop whatever flavors you want! By simply adding cinnamon and maple syrup, I was able to create a delicious and festive fall dessert. Most recently, I’ve been using the same stored mix to make nutella mug cakes by stirring in a spoonful of nutella (good golly, I’m just giving away all my secrets today!) I love that when I want some cake, which is frequently, all I need to do is combine cake mix with water. It’s simply wonderful. You can find the recipe for my simple cinnamon maple mug cake below!

It’s only $4.99 and for each piece purchased, a meal is donated to Feeding America (how awesome?!). I’m not being paid to sell mugs to you, I just love this mug and the opportunity to make a difference by purchasing one!
